How to get started?
How to get started with recreational scuba diving?
As a start you need to be a healthy person. Before starting any dive activity, you will have to fill up a medical form about your medical condition. In case of doubt ot medical issues, a medical certificate is needed.
If fit and healthy, you can either start with a discover scuba diving or with an open water course. A discover scuba diving or DSD will be your first experience in the open water to a maximun of 12 meters with a dive instructor. DSDs are not a course, means you want get any certifications.
To be able to go for fun dives with a dive master you need first to undertake an open water course. You will start with been comfortable in the water with your dive gear on in a pool, to learn buoyancy and safety skills and with a video to be watched to get all the necessary knowledge. Then you will be ready to jump into the water for a minimum of 4 open water dives with a dive instructor . Finally a written exam is mandatory to test your assimilation of all the basics to be safe in the water for yourself and the other divers.
For a first try: discover scuba diving experience
To participate in a DSD program (Discover Scuba Diving), you must be 10 or older. The maximum depth allowed is 12 meters.
The Discover Scuba Diving program introduces people to scuba diving in a highly supervised and relaxed manner.
It dispels common misconceptions about scuba by letting individuals try it for themselves.
Under the guidance of a dive professional, new divers learn basic safety concepts, put on equipment and swim around underwater in a closely supervised environment.
The Discover Scuba Diving program can take place in a swimming pool, protected confined open water area (or shore diving) and at an open water dive site — anywhere an appropriate, positive introduction to scuba diving is possible.
To our opinion, sea water is much more fun than a pool! Besides you can already spot nice fishes, turtles and beautiful under water landscapes.
You can repeat this experience as many times as you want. Many divers would rather go for their first diving certification in doing an Open Water course.
For your first certification: experience the open water diver course
Open Water divers are qualified to dive with a buddy independent of supervision within the limits of their training and experience which is a maximum of 18 meters. To participate to this course you need to be 15 or more. However from 10 to 15 years old you can go for a Junior Open Water course.
The Open Water program will teach the students divers the foundational knowledge and skills they need through knowledge developments (book & video), confined water dives (about 1 hour in a pool or in confined open water) and 4 open water dives.
The course will end up with a Multiple choices questionnaire which is very difficult to miss as you had 3 to 4 days to absorb all necessary informations.
The Open Water course will provide you all the necessary knowledge regarding your equipment, body, buoyancy, breathing, safety and environment. No worries, it does not need to be in a classroom to study your book! The beach can be a good spot as well!
