KOH TAO DIVE SITES
KOH TAO DIVE SITES:
Koh Tao is world famous for its diving. One of the main reason for that would be the amount of dive sites accessible from this island: indeed there are over 20 dive sites surrounding Koh Tao ! Ok, there are not all good, but still…Lets review the 7 ones where we are used to go.
Mango Bay is a beautiful bay on the north side of Koh Tao that offers amazing snorkeling as well as ideal diving training conditions. It is a really shallow dive site even if you can reach 18 meters, the good stuff is quite shallow. The coral garden seems to never end as it goes all the way out of the bay.
Lighthouse Bay is mainly a boulder formation that offers lots of swim-through with an impressive light effect if you swim out of the bay. All the usual colorful companions are seen along with others like morish idol and black fin surgeon fish.
Shark Island is the home to some of the biggest titan trigger fish in the area. Can also be found an albinos moray eel that is surviving since many years. Watch out sometime the current is very strong on one side of the dive site.
Koh Nangyuan constitutes 3 little islands united by a triangular sand bank. It is also a very famous post card picture; these islands offer really awesome snorkeling as well as diving.
There is 4 dive sites surrounding Koh Nangyuan:
- Japanese Garden is so vast that you can easily plan a second dive there, the dive site is divided in 2 areas: one is the coral garden and the other is the rock side.
The coral garden is a mix of soft & hard corals that are covered with Christmas three worms with anemones randomly spread out.
The rock side have less corals but offers a few swim-through; the rock formation gives shelter to all kind of marine species, beautiful yellow margin trigger fish, banded sea snakes, bat fish are ones of many encountered species. Beware of titan trigger fish; they are in numbers over there! But we will let you know when they will be protecting their eggs, don't worry!
- Twins consists of 2 groups of granite rocks ranging from 18 to 6 meters. Covering the rock is a mixture of soft & hard corals. On the deeper side you will find huge groupers, blue spotted sting rays and white eye moray eels. On the shallow side you will find an entertaining family of clark’s anemone fish as well as butterfly fish, colorful wrasses, parrot fish and sergeant major.
- White Rock is a main granite pinnacle with other rock formations reaching from 1 to 22 meters. This dive site offers appropriate depth for beginners to intermediate divers and enough marine life for all. Butterfly fish, parrot fish, angel fish, long fin banner fish are part of the colorful companions you will spot along the dive.
- Green Rock is a boulder rock formation with a bottom at 28 meters and the top at 1 meter. It offers some swim-through; ideal for adventurous divers seeking for extra sensations.
Encounter yellow margin & titan trigger fish, blue spotted sting rays, white eye moray eels is possible. All the usual fish are there even the good old hawkbill turtle can be seen.
