YES THE REEF CAN APPEAR IN FLUO!
One increasingly popular diving technique, called fluorescence (fluo) night diving / snorkeling, gives divers / snorkelers the ability to observe marine creatures in brilliant, glowing colors invisible to the naked eye.
Divers / snorkelers, who are inquisitive by nature, are always looking for new ways to experience the wonders of the underwater world.
We propose to you a unique experience! See our VIDEO
THE PHENOMENOM IS CALLED CORAL BIOFLUORESCENCE
More than 180 species (mostly corals) got some specific minerals and proteins that got the property to appear fluorescent under ultraviolet lights.
Its a natural chemical reaction harmless for the marine life related to this phenemenom.

OUR SPECIFIC GEAR TO SEE IN FLUO
To view biofluorescence, fluo divers and snorkelers equip themselves with black light torches: UV or blue lights. With the blue lights, you need to wear a yellow barrier filter. The barrier filter's function is to block the blue light that is reflected back to the observer from the organisms on which the light is shining. In blocking the blue, all you will see are the emission colors (biofluorescence).
Back up white light torches are essential to light better your way as not everything is glowing under the black lights. They are usefull as well to light fish that are not appearing in fluo.
To better spot each other during the dive, each diver got a dive marker with a specific color.
- FLUORESCENT SNORKELING
We know several spots in the north west part of Phangan that we choose depending of the wind direction. We can either go by boat (equiped with a sonar, a GPS, lights, radio...) or from the beach. We jump into the sea just after sunset time and stay in very shallow areas close from the shore.
Anyone can join us as long as you can swim!
- FLUORESCENT DIVING
We can dive locally from one of our secret spots where we have some coral gardens and easy access. We start the dive just after sunset time.
Or we can dive the best dive site of Thailand: Sail Rock for a sunset dive and a night dive in a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The boat will start around 17:00 from Chaloklum.
To participate in a fluo night dive you must
- be certified as an Open Water Diver
- have prior non fluo night diving experience (Min 1 night dives)
- be at least 12 years old.
WHAT EXPECTING TO SEE ?
Prepare to be hypnotized by a magical array of psychedelic colours: fluorescent green, orange, blue, yellow, red, purple...
Some examples of glowing species include hard and soft corals alive, sponges, shrimps, moray eels, octopus, crabs, anemones, sharks (never seen), sting rays, flatfishes, jelly fish, a variety of shelled animals, coral polyps...
Expect to see all the reef glowing. As you know, by night most of the fish are hiding to rest and sleep. And very few will glow.
Try it! You won’t be disappointed...
